History of the current stadium
The Association had been searching for a suitable facility since the early 90s. Despite efforts from both the council and our organization, no appropriate land or building could be found. Originally, there were plans to construct a 4-court stadium in Jerrabomberra, near the current primary school, as part of a joint venture with QCC, supported by state and federal funding. Unfortunately, this plan fell through due to financial difficulties in our parent body's facility program.
An alternative proposal involved an indoor facility, football fields, and a showground on Hoover Road, coupled with the sale of land at the showground. However, this idea also faced obstacles, mainly due to the status of the showground land.
Another potential solution emerged when the YMCA faced financial challenges. There was a suggestion to convert the YMCA into a strata plan and sell the stadium to raise funds for the YMCA. However, QCC, at that time, was not willing to purchase the facility. Consequently, we had no choice but to secure funding independently, relying on a bank loan and some additional funding. This was considered an interim measure in 1997.
To facilitate the process, the Basketball Association leased the land next to the stadium back to QCC. In return, QCC waived the interest on a loan that had been provided to undertake repair work on the stadium before the Association took occupancy. The current stadium configuration includes 2 three-quarter courts running crosswise to one full-length court.
